Unit 3

Unit 3: Awareness of Converging Digital Technology in the Creative Media Sector

Understand the use of digital technology within the Creative Media sector

1.1 Describe the uses of digital technology within the Creative Media sector and the relationships this has created between industries in the sector
Digital technology is often used for 'updating' communication in the media sector. Mobile phones are used for social networking, emails, other messaging services and uploading photos to sites such as Facebook, Pinterest, Tumblr and Instagram. They can also be used for listening to music via apps such as Spotify, Sound Cloud and Blinkbox.

You can now interact online to media apps, like Netflix, iPlayer and 4oD through Smart TV's and game consoles such as Xbox and Playstation. Sites such as Netflix and Lovefilm are good examples of converging technology as they are easy to access through televisions, iPads and computers.

Converging technologies has allowed advertising companies to work with social networking sites to promote and become recognisable through Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

1.2 Describe key Intellectual Property and copyright issues, related to digital technology and content creation
A Creative Commons copyright license sets a balance between the traditional "all rights reserved" setting that copyright law creates. The tools that they use gives individuals and large companies a simple way to grant permissions to their creative work. The tools that they offer give them the right to have their content copied, distributed, edited and remixed within the copyright law boundaries.
The copyright license has a unique 3 layer design. The first layer has the traditional legal tool which is called the Legal Code layer. The Common Deed which is also called human readable is useful for licensors which summarises the important terms and conditions. This is only considered as a helpful, user friendly tool. The final layer is a summary of the key freedoms and obligations written into a format that software systems and other technology can understand. All these layers together ensure that it's not just a legal concept but something that the creators of the work can understand.

Understand the implications of converging technology on the workforce in a particular
Creative Media industry

2.1 Explain what is meant by converging technology
Converging technology is the process in which existing technologies merge to develop new and different types of media. Most devices can do basic tasks but by converging technologies devices are able to do a wider range of media types.

2.2 Explain the impact of converging technology on the workforce within a specific Creative Media industry
The impact of converging technology on the workforce in the creative media industry can be both positive and negative. The positives of changing technology is it allows the business/company to be up to date and can allow them to expand their ideas. One implication with this is that they may lack knowledge with a new technology and will be time consuming as they will need to show and train this employee. Competitors could lack use of new technology which could be an advantage for your business. The complications of new technologies is pace of change. Technology in the workplace doesn't necessarily make you do old things faster but allows you to change the nature of your job. If one employee was to use new technology to get tasks complete it might take them less time, so they will need to find other tasks to complete which could be both a positive and a negative, as this could effect other employees left with no tasks to complete.

Know how converging technology has been exploited to reach new audiences and generate revenue

3.1 Describe the changing expectations of audiences and consumers within a chosen Creative Media industry
Audiences are expecting content to be available on mobile phones and tablets, if the websites are not set up for this type of format then they will not get as many consumers.

3.2 Describe examples of how ideas for multi-platform content have been used to reach new audiences and generate revenue
There is a number of different ways to view content on the internet and as different browsers don't have the same functions, websites try to keep it as usable as possible. The websites will need to be compatible with mobile phones and tablets so that they get a larger audience viewing their site.

3.3 Describe examples of commissioning processes and funding opportunities in relation to converging technology
Adapting websites to be compatible for mobiles and tablets can be time consuming and costly.

Be able to plan a research exercise to test an idea for exploiting converging technology

4.1, 4.2 & 4.3

Due to most people using their mobile phones or tablets I would design an app that allows you to order the food in a restaurant before you arrive. Using geographical locations to target customers.

I would need to carry out some research on the idea by looking at apps that are already designed such as Just Eat and look at what attracts customers to using it.
One thing that could be an issue is some restaurants may not want to operate that way so it could only be selected restaurants that choose to use this. By using geographical locations to target customers it helps as they will see local restaurants that they may have been to or wanted to try.

  1. 2.2 I love that you have recognized that there is a negative side to convergence and not just the positive. Of course we can all see the positive but we don't always see the negative. However a better example might be the impact on jobs because of convergence. For example when a new piece of technology comes along that allows one man to do the job of three those other two people need to find another job.

3.3 the link to the "Did you know" youtube video, I nearly skipped past it. please embed the video instead.

On some of the later answers because of the sparsity of the answer I have difficulty determining what the question was. Please either type the question before the answer or give a more detailed answer that allows the reader to determine what the question was. I don't mind a brief answer if that is all that is required but an external examiner might not have the questions to hand when viewing your blog.

  2. 4.2 and 4.3 please point to the answer or inform as to wether it is answered in some other form such a cross referencing with another project or unit etc..
