Unit 2

Unit 2 - Communicating and Presenting Ideas in the Creative Media Sector

Understand how to communicate in the work place

1.1 - Describe several communication techniques and explain their appropriate application

The three main communication techniques that are used on a daily basis in the creative media sector are verbal, non verbal and visual.
Verbal communication includes the use of words in order to deliver the intended message. The two major forms of verbal communication are written and oral communication. Written communication could be seen as not being often used in the creative media sector as it is a formal way of communication. However, producing documents, sending emails and texts could be used and are included as part of written communication. Some companies may produce brochures or leaflets as a form of marketing and promotion.
Oral communication is the form of communication face-to-face or spoken through a phone or Skype. The effectiveness of an oral communication depends on the pitch, volume and pace of speech. Another way that could be used is body language. Verbal communication is seen as the most successful way of communication as you are able to process thoughts and feelings faster.
Non Verbal communication includes facial expressions, tone, pitch and gestures displayed through body language. The use of non verbal communication gives the other person you are conversating with any additional information that you are giving. Interpreting non verbal can not always be simple but is shown by the context in which it is shown.
Visual communication could be seen as the most successful form of communication in the creative media sector as it is communicated through drawing, signs, graphic design illustration, colour and many other ways. Sometimes using visual communication can be more powerful than verbal and non verbal communication and often gets the message across a lot faster than written communication.

1.2 - Compare a range of techniques used for influencing and persuading others and their application

Three ways you might influence someone to achieve a task is through showing your idea, selling it and being enthusiastic about it. There is many different ways you can used to persuade people to be interested in your idea. You could show them a similar idea and compare and contrast so they can see the difference. You could use images or videos also known as a mood book to get your idea across. An important way of persuading would be to get them to visualise your idea by showing the ins and outs of the idea even something as simple as showing them the colour scheme or the materials that are going to be used to carry out the idea.
Selling your idea would include showing them the cost. Gathering together information and prices helps the customer to see the overall cost and helps them to place everything together in their minds. Location is also key to an idea and giving them other possible venues shows you have done background research. Décor and costumes could be included in your idea and would help them to visualise.
Enthusiasm is important in selling your idea as you are trying to persuade them to invest or use your idea. Another thing that could link into this is dressing appropriately for what you are selling.

1.3 - Describe how to give and receive constructive feedback
Constructive feedback is issue focused and based on observations. It can come in two varieties either positive or negative based on how the persons opinions and feelings. The information given is mainly general and vague.
Content - When addressing the constructive feedback, you should identify the issue or feedback and then provide specifics of what occured.
When giving your feedback you should be sincere and avoid giving mixed messages.

1.4 - Describe methods used to communicate technical and specialist teams within and across teams

Techniques you could use to communicate your ideas could be through the use of PowerPoint, mood books/videos and models.

Be able to present own ideas in different environments

2.1 - Describe examples of effective presentation techniques
There are a few factors that you need to consider when providing a successful presentation. Some of the techniques include jargon which is special words or expressions that are used by a group. Another factor that is important is dressing or speaking appropriately to the audience you are delivering the presentation to. For example if you are delivering the presentation to other employees or companies then the way you will speak to them in a formal manner. If the presentation is for a media company or a younger audience then the presentation and way you deliver it could be a bit more relaxed and informal.

  1. Your explanation for 1.1 is excellent and unique. I don't see that kind of explanation often. You display an acute attention to detail choosing to talk about personal communication in terms of facial expressions, tone and body language etc. This is very good but you still need to talk about the digital side of things. Texts, social media, telecommunication, TV, Cinema, etc etc etc. Then you really will have covered all the basis.

1.3 again your explanation is good but it could be improved by mentioning the tone and focus of feedback. For example you should make your point when giving feedback 'once' and then move on. You should also end a negative with a positive highlighting room for improvement but finishing with something that has been improved or is showing promise.

The overall unit is excellent as usual and you have really showed some flare with regard to the answers you have given. Well done.
